Ninety years ago today, Henry and Edsel Ford drove the 15,000,000th Model T off the famed assembly line in Detroit Michigan. Yes, you read it correctly, fifteen million. Eventually, it became the 8th most popular car in history. Impressive, considering that Ford in many ways created the market for affordable cars.

Some time back I was asked to come visit a winery that expressed an interest in adopting a Lean management system in their organization. I was excited to come see a larger winery in action, and took in every step of the process from crushing grapes to shipping final product with great interest. After all, I’ve been drinking wine ever since I was a kid at the dinner table (the product of a traditional Italian family) and now, here I was seeing a large-scale wine making operation in action.

Some years back I was involved in an auto repair business. We were developing a national chain of repair centers and while in the thick of it we had an objective of opening one store per month nationwide. While we built most of the stores from scratch, in some cases we bought existing shops and then converted them to our management system. There was one example in particular that I found to be demonstrative to the power of leadership.
